Biographical Timeline

1916~1955

  • 1919

    Ilhan New graduated from the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

  • 1922

    Ilhan New established La Choy Food Products, Inc. with his university classmate, Wally Smith.

  • 1926

    Ilhan New returned to Korea, which was under Japanese occupation, and established Yuhan Corporation on the core belief that “Only heathy people can reclaim their sovereignty.”

  • 1941

    Ilhan New earned an MBA degree from the University of Southern California and became a member of the Executive Committee of the Overseas Korean Convention.

  • 1942

    Ilhan New served as an advisor to the United States Office of Strategic Services (OSS), and helped establish the Mangho-Kun (Tiger Army), comprised of Koreans living in the Unites States.

  • 1945

    Ilhan New became part of project NAPKO (an OSS mission to infiltrate Japanese-held Korea with Korean troops), and served as leader of Team One.

  • 1946

    Ilhan New returned to Korea after 8 years, assumed the duties of president of Yuhan Corporation, and was named the first chairman of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

  • 1948

    Ilhan New studied international law at Stanford University.

  • 1952

    Ilhan New established the Korean School of Engineering Technology, his first educational venture.
